Ms Simone at the Turbine Art Fair 2021

September 29, 2021 - October 03, 2021

The term evergreen relates to or denotes a plant that retains its green leaves throughout the year. It speaks of a plant’s resilience towards the changing seasons of a year and commends it for remaining strong and ever fresh. The term evergreen can in this case also be applied to the resilience of the human spirit through difficult times.

The past year was one filled with anxiety, illness, uncertainty, fear, and doubt. The global pandemic Covid – 19 brought with it, grief, dread and created an inconducive environment for the arts and arts practitioners. The national lockdown instituted by the South African government in an attempt at curbing the rapidly increasing infection rate left several South African’s unemployed and hopeless, cultural centers, galleries, museums, and exhibition sites had to temporarily close, leaving a gap in the art market.

Besides all this negativity, South African visual artists such as Themba Khumalo, Lindo Zwane, Theko Boshomane, and Teboho Moakhotso continued to work throughout the pandemic, irrespective of prospective exhibitions and questionable economic gains. They continued to create works of art that inspired us to go on.

Although varied in their subject matter, medium and application, the artists tackled different concepts of being in an exciting and intriguing manner.

Ms Simone will be showing these artists creations at the Turbine Art Fair: TAF Arcade 2021 taking place from 9 - 12 September 2021
